This week’s Featured Foodie is The Water Prince!
The Water Prince Corner Shop is a well known restaurant and lobster pound located one block from the beautiful Charlottetown waterfront in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
We walked over to the Water Prince for lunch the other day. I’d always wanted to go there and we were not disappointed. The food was great and the service was super and friendly. We had a delicious lobster roll, fish burger and [great] fries, and seafood chowder and homemade biscuit. Owner Shane Campbell came and sat down with us to chat and tell us the hilarious story of Martha, a mannequin that fell off a pickup truck many years ago and ended up becoming a landmark out front of their shop. There were many Martha adventure tales to tell. Really hilarious.
The 1850’s building was purchased by Shane Campbell in 1991. After extensive renovations (and again in 2008), he transformed the former corner store to a quaint seafood restaurant “like no other”. With long hours and hard work, Shane and his family developed a successful business.
Seafood can be shipped to your door to most places within Canada or enjoy fresh seafood meals prepared in the restaurant. The seafood chowder served with a homemade biscuit, scallop burger, and fish and chips (halibut or haddock served with handcut PEI potatoes) are legendary. Also, a classic order is a 1.5 lb. lobster dinner (served with an appetizer of PEI steamed mussels), but other sizes of lobster are also available to suit one’s appetite.
While waiting for your meal to be prepared, check out the extensive license plate collection decorating the walls.
When asked what is the secret to his great seafood, Shane replied, “keep it simple – a bit of salt, a little garlic in the butter – as natural as possible – and of course, freshness is key, thanks to our great suppliers. Customers who enjoy a great meal do our advertising for us, and we really appreciate that.”
You know your lobster is fresh when you see lobster holding crates at the back door. They also have salt water holding tanks that hold up to 1,000 pounds of lobster.
