Today’s Featured Foodie is Martin O’Brien and Cascumpec Bay Oyster Company!
So what are PEI oyster growers up to at this time of year? We reached out to Martin O’Brien to find out and here are a few things going on with Cascumpec Bay Oyster Company.
The season is starting up soon and Cascumpec Bay Oyster Company is already gearing up, sending their first shipments out at the end of April. With lots of oysters held over from the fall harvest, they are looking forward to a very busy season with lots to sell this Spring.
They have loads of repair work to be done. Late last fall an early ice formation, combined with a snowstorm, shifted the ice and devastated their lease. About a third of their cages were still floating, but all of them ended up in a tangled mess. There was some loss of oysters, but equipment-wise they are in for a big year of repairs. That’s mother nature for ya!
Maintaining and improving quality is always top-of-mind with Martin.
In spite of that, they are very positive and excited about the year ahead, expanding the oyster farm by approximately 25%. On top of that, Martin’s sister has joined the team by adding some of her own cages. They are adding some new equipment, streamlining the whole process making it easier and faster, while maintaining and improving quality which is always top-of-mind with Martin. He also plans to build a new state-of-the-art processing plant with the hopes of being up and running by next winter. And knowing Martin, we have no doubts it’ll happen!
